PETALING JAYA: PKR outgoing president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today rejected accusations of nepotism following her husband Anwar Ibrahim’s decision to contest the Port Dickson parliamentary by-election.

She said she saw no issue in having three members of her family as MPs, adding that it is the voters’ choice.

The Pandan MP’s daughter, Nurul Izzah is the MP for Permatang Pauh.

“What is the issue? I thought we were voted in by the people?” she told reporters after a visit to Yayasan Orphancare here.

Port Dickson incumbent Danyal Balagopal Abdullah yesterday vacated the seat to make way for Anwar in his preparation to return to Parliament and eventually take over as the 8th prime minister as agreed by Pakatan Harapan.

Lawyer-activist Siti Kasim yesterday urged voters in the constituency to reject the PKR president-elect in the by-election, saying the party and his family “must be taught a lesson”.

“They did this three times! No more! They think they can do whatever they like at our expense? Nope!” she said on Instagram.

PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin questioned the party’s decision-making process, urging Anwar to explain his stand.

Zuraida said the decision should have been decided by consensus and gotten full support from PKR’s 840,000 members.

She said if the decision-making process was not open and democratic, it could cause confusion among the people and give the impression that PKR was “manipulated by certain factions”.

In response, Wan Azizah said now was the right time for Anwar to contest in order to return to Parliament after being denied his rights.

“He has been imprisoned for 10, 11 years, so who is talking about being patient?” she said.
